Herbert enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and stayed in until 1962. After that, he worked as a civilian for the Navy with a break for a couple of years when he worked for what is now Illinois toolworks, a big corporation now. During the war, he was in the South Pacific aboard a troop transport, USS Wharton, where he was a mechanic. He was an airplane mechanic after the war and before he retired from his civilian work he worked on propellers for a variety of aircraft.

Herbert met Violet and they married in Chicago in May 1947.

Bonnie born in 1955
He visited Sweden with his wife in 1981 but did not see any family at the time.
Herbert died in Glenview, Ill in 1988.
